CAPE TOWN SPURS AXE ERNST MIDDENDORP FOLLOWING THE CLUB RELEGATION

Cape Town Spurs have officially dismissed former Kaizer Chiefs coach Ernst Middendorp following the club’s demotion from the PSL.

Middendorp was brought in during the second half of the season in an attempt to help Spurs avoid relegation as moving up the log became increasingly challenging.

The Urban Warriors announced Middendorp’s departure in a statement on Monday, stating that the club will now focus on plotting the way forward.

“Cape Town Spurs F.C. and Ernst Middendorp have mutually agreed to terminate their working relationship with immediate effect,” reads part of the statement.

Spurs CEO Alexi Efstathiou expressed gratitude to Middendorp for his commitment and dedication during his tenure with the club.

Furthermore, Efstathiou mentioned that Middendorp was willing to stay with Spurs even after their relegation to the Motsepe Foundation Championship.

However, due to the restrictive financial circumstances, Spurs were unable to retain him, as explained by Efstathiou in the same statement.

“On behalf of the board and the club, we would like to convey our sincere gratitude to Ernst for his commitment and dedication over the recent months.

“The spirited fight that he was able to lead in the second phase with our team was nothing short of amazing.

“Unfortunately, due to the restrictive financial environment of the NFD, the club was unable to extend the relationship,” stated Efstathiou.

“There is nothing malicious in the decision, as the coach clearly indicated that he was willing to stay and assist the team in returning to the PSL,” added the CEO.

Middendorp oversaw 19 league games for Spurs this past season, and 20 overall if one includes the Nedbank Cup.

The German coach secured only five victories and five draws, while Spurs suffered nine league defeats.

Spurs concluded the campaign with 23 points from the 30 league games played, resulting in their relegation.
