CAPE TOWN CITY WON’T COME UP SHORT NEXT SEASON, SAYS HEAD COACH ERIC TINKLER

Eric Tinkler says that Cape Town City is set to delve into the transfer market during the off-season.

The Citizen’s ended in fifth place in the recently completed DStv Premiership campaign.

It was a disappointing season for the club that had finished in second position in the 2021/22 season and in third a year later.

Tinkler admits that he was overly dependent on youngsters this time around, having seen a number of experienced players depart the club without being replaced.

But with ambitions to play continental football going forward, the Citizen’s boss explained that now is the time for some significant investment.

Haashim Domingo, Fortune Makaringe, Kamohelo Mokotjo, Carlinhos, and Alifeyo Sibusiso Ziba are all reportedly set to join City this season.

Tinkler said on iDiski Times: “I think the season that just ended, we took a little bit too many risks with the number of youngsters we were bleeding into the team.

“Over the past three seasons, we have lost some experienced players, moved on to other clubs, other opportunities, but we really haven’t gone into the market looking to bring someone of experience and maturity.

“This is a discussion we had quite a while back to make sure that this coming season we have a lot more depth in our squad.”

City midfielder Khanya Leshabela has, meanwhile, been released by the club.

The 24-year-old only joined the team in February but has been deemed surplus to requirements.
