Benni McCarthy has been appointed as the new head coach of Cape Town City on a three-year contract, the club announced on Tuesday. Bafana’s record scorer replaces Eric Tinkler who left for SuperSport United last week Thursday.
The deal was struck on Monday afternoon after successful talks between McCarthy and John Comitis over the weekend. This will be McCarthy’s first post as a head coach, having been an assistant of Chris O’Loughlin for Belgian top flight club Sint-Truidense between September 2015 and April 2016. McCarthy is currently completing his UEFA Pro Licence, the highest level available.
The Bafana Bafana legend was close to joining Orlando Pirates in January, but Dr Irvin Khoza instead opted for Muhsin Ertugral, who quit after just four months. McCarthy takes charge of a team that finished third in the Absa Premiership as well as having won the Telkom Knockout in their maiden top flight campaign. He will also lead the Citizens in their debut CAF Confederations Cup next season.
Cape Town-born McCarthy lacks coaching experience; however, he can offer a lot of experience to the players and would be a good mentor to them. Having being managed by Jose Mourinho, Benni could be worth the gamble. The 39-year-old will relish the challenge of guiding the Mother City-based club to more success next season.
