Cape Town City coach, Eric Tinkler, breathed a sigh of relief after his side secured a much-needed 1-0 win over Polokwane City.
The victory halted a recent slump that saw the Citizens fail to advance in the Carling Knockout and struggle in the Betway Premiership.
Tinkler emphasized the importance of the win, stating, “Three points at home were extremely important. We needed to start on a front foot, because obviously five games into the league and only having five points for us as a club that is not good enough,” said Tinkler.
The Citizens’ recent form, including a disappointing loss to Mamelodi Sundowns and a goalless draw against Magesi, highlighted the need for improvement. Tinkler acknowledged the team’s shortcomings in the final third and praised their improved performance against Polokwane City.
While the coach was pleased with the win, he also noted that key players like Haashim Domingo still need to regain their scoring touch. Despite this, Tinkler stressed the importance of results over performances, emphasizing the team’s ability to find a way to win.
“We know the games against Sundowns, the performance wasn’t great and the result wasn’t great. With Magesi, a 0-0 draw. So we have focused on the last couple of weeks, especially on the final third. A little bit more control and more composure, and I think we did that today. I think we were more dominant than what we have shown in the past couple of games,” added Tinkler.
