Orlando Pirates players have been called into question after a video circulated on social media citing first-team players calling out betting markets.
The video released on X cites Sipho Chaine saying, “12 May, half past five, Old Trafford, Straight win R600, Bet now Sipho, Over 2.5” in the changing rooms.
The video has sparked a huge outcry on X, with users citing their recent defeat on home soil against relegation-threatened Richards Bay to be linked to this scandal. On X, @MongezyH went on to say, “Can you investigate their bets against Richard’s Bay” whilst @mphobenni said, “Richards Bay & under 4.5 🤔 please investigate 👀👀”.
Shockingly, despite having approximately three-quarters of the ball in that one, the hosts failed to find the back of the net. This comes after the Soweto Giants were on a rampant scoring streak, some twenty games long (across all competitions).
A statement released on Orlando Pirates’s website read, “The Club has noted a video circulating on social media involving two of our players discussing betting. We would like to clarify that the players in the video did not place any bets. The video captured a light-hearted moment among teammates purporting to have placed a bet on an English Premiership match.”
The statement added, “As a Club, we are fully aware of the regulations regarding betting. Betting on any sport is strictly prohibited for any professional player. However, we have addressed the matter with the players involved, emphasizing that even in jest, such discussions can have serious implications.”
Pirates have scheduled league appointments with TS Galaxy and Supersport before contesting the Nedbank Cup final with Mamelodi Sundowns on 01 June 2024.
