CAF Champions League: Orlando Pirates suffer narrow defeat to Jwaneng Galaxy

Jwaneng Galaxy defeated Orlando Pirates 1-0 in the first leg of their CAF Champions League preliminary round tie on Sunday.

The home side made their intent known from the start, with Thabang Sesinyi narrowly missing the target in the second minute.

Jwaneng continued to press, and in the 16th minute, Richard Ofori had to rush out to gather the ball before Sesinyi could pounce.

Pirates tried to come into the game, but neither side were able to trouble the other’s goalkeeper before half-time.

However, in the first minute of added time, Morena Ramoreboli’s team took the lead, with Daniel Msendami scoring the only goal of the match.

Jwaneng Galaxy continued to press in the second half, and they could have doubled their lead in the 59th minute, but the goal was later cancelled.

Pirates made changes to try and get an away goal, but they were unable to break down the Jwaneng defence.

The second leg will take place in a fortnight, and Pirates will need to overturn a 1-0 deficit if they want to advance to the CAF Champions League group stage.
