Broos thinks Makgopa should leave Baroka

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has urged forward Evidence Makgopa to leave newly-relegated Baroka FC and join a current DStv Premiership side instead.

The 21-year-old Makgopa is one of the 23 players named in Broos’ squad for the 2023 CAF Africa Cup of Nations qualifier on 9 June between South Africa and Morocco (21h00) at Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium.
Makgopa has been in decent form for Bafana scoring three goals in eight appearances and has been a regular in Broos’ squad, but has only scored four times for his relegated club Baroka.
When asked if he was happy with Makgopa’s progress, coach Broos said: “No!”… “I think you can do more with Evidence because he is a player with the right qualities and he is young.

“But you have to teach him how he has to run, how he has to control the ball and how he needs to take up a position in front of the goal. I can’t do that. I can’t do that.

“This is something that has to be done at the club. You have to work with this guy every day and he will become better because he is strong, he is tall and he is good with his head but there are still some things that he doesn’t have at the moment,” Broos explained.
“I keep confidence in him because if I let him down now, he’s gone, and I don’t want that because this is a youngster with qualities.

“I hope that he will one day be at a club where they will really work with him and you will see, he will be a good striker.”
Broos added that Makgopa needs to be at a club that plays in the DStv Premiership rather than in the GladAfrica Championship.
“I really hope Evidence can change clubs so that he can stay in the Premiership,” Broos added.
“I really hope it because if he goes to the second division, it would not be good for him. I’m not sure if would pick a player from the second tier.

“I think if Evidence went into the second division, it would be very difficult for him to stay with Bafana Bafana. The difference would be bigger than it already is now, so it is very difficult.”
