Despite having already secured their place in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos remains focused on maintaining momentum. With two games left in the qualifying campaign, Broos aims for a strong finish, particularly against South Sudan on Tuesday at DHL Stadium.
A victory over South Sudan would solidify South Africa’s position at the top of Group K, boosting their points tally to 14. This would be a fitting end to a successful year, which already includes a bronze medal at the recent AFCON tournament in Ivory Coast.
Thapelo Morena and Patrick Maswanganyi were instrumental in South Africa’s 2-0 victory over Uganda on Friday. Their clinical performance at Mandela National Stadium propelled Bafana Bafana to the top of the group, surpassing Uganda’s 10 points.
“We have to win on Tuesday in South Africa against South Sudan,” said Broos after the game as per the SABCSport.
“It will not be nice from our side if on Tuesday we lose that game, but I heard they will be a good crowd in the stadium.
“So, we will try to give something nice to our supporters next Tuesday by winning against South Sudan.
“Let’s say that we win next Tuesday, I think we will be on 14 points from 18, that’s a lot. There are some games where we could have won, especially at home against Uganda.
“We have nearly the maximum of the points (if we beat South Sudan). But it was very important for us to win here on Friday and certainly to be the first in the group and nobody can tell us now that we are lucky like some who were saying on Thursday after the Congo was defeated – ‘South Africa was lucky’.
“I think we proved on Friday that we don’t need luck, that if we want or prove to that we can win games and we will be on 14 points if we win on Tuesday that we deserve to qualify for AFCON.”
