Matsatsantsa and Masandawana faced off in a highly anticipated capital derby at Lucas ‘Masterpieces’ Moripe Stadium, with three points on the line.
It was Miguel Cardoso’s side who claimed the bragging rights, securing a dominant 3-0 win over SuperSport United in the Tshwane Derby on Wednesday night. The win not only extends Sundowns’ strong record against SuperSport, but it also completes a season double after their 2-0 victory in September.
That being said, here’s a look at three players who stood out in the derby:
Lucas Ribeiro Costa
While Tashreeq Matthews’ brace certainly deserved recognition, I need to start with Lucas Ribeiro Costa – who truly ran the show in midfield. The Sundowns playmaker, who leads the Betway Premiership scoring charts with seven goals, played a pivotal role in orchestrating his team’s attack. It’s turning into a season to remember for Costa!

Gape Moralo
SuperSport’s best chance came in the 28th minute from a set-piece. After Brooklyn Poggenpoel was fouled by Sundowns’ Malibongwe Khoza, a free kick was awarded just outside the box. Gape Moralo came close to leveling the score, but his shot struck the upright, with Sundowns keeper Ronwen Williams well beaten.
Jayden Adams
Sundowns took the lead early, just 11 minutes in, when debutant Jayden Adams, making his first start, found the back of the net. The former Stellenbosch FC midfielder earned the Man-of-the-Match award for his standout performance, and he’ll be aiming to cement his spot in one of the most competitive squads in Africa.
This victory marked Sundowns’ ninth consecutive win in the Betway Premiership, extending their excellent form as they head into a crucial clash against Orlando Pirates this weekend. With momentum on their side, Sundowns will aim to make it 10 in a row against the second-placed Pirates.
Sundowns remain six points clear at the top of the table with 39 points from 14 matches, while Orlando Pirates sit second with 33 points. Next up is a trip to Loftus Versfeld for a clash with a high-flying Orlando Pirates. Kickoff is set for 15:30 on Saturday, 8 February.
