Betway Prem: Kaizer Chiefs secure PSL victory ahead of Soweto Derby

A stunning late goal from Mfundo Vilakazi gave Kaizer Chiefs a 1-0 victory over Sekhukhune United in a tense Betway Premiership match at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on Sunday.

Playing their second consecutive home game at their alternative venue, Chiefs were looking to bounce back from a recent defeat to Golden Arrows. They were without suspended head coach Nasreddine Nabi.

The first half was a tight affair, with both sides creating chances. Chiefs’ Rushwin Dortley forced a good save from Sekhukhune goalkeeper Badra Sangare early on, while Wandile Duba missed a one-on-one opportunity. Sekhukhune also had a chance through Vuyo Letlapa, whose long-range effort was saved by Bruce Bvuma. Just before half-time, Sangare again denied Chiefs, saving from Tebogo Potsane.

Sekhukhune made attacking changes at half-time, while Chiefs introduced Mfundo Vilakazi and Yusuf Maart. Sangare continued his impressive performance, denying Vilakazi in the 79th minute.

A turning point came in the 84th minute when Letlapa was shown a straight red card for a challenge on Vilakazi. Chiefs immediately capitalized on their numerical advantage, with Vilakazi curling a shot past Sangare in the 87th minute to secure the win.

The victory ends Sekhukhune’s five-game winning streak and provides a boost for Chiefs ahead of the upcoming Soweto Derby.
