Samuel Eto’o says he doesn’t understand why Bafana are so poor when the majority of players come from the highly-rated DStv Premiership.
The South African national side have notoriously underperformed on the national stage.
Bafana have only won the Africa Cup of Nations once, in 1996 and most recently failed to qualify for the competition, in 2021, after a quarter-final finish in 2019.
This time around, Bafana will face Mali, Namibia and Tunisia in Group E.
Cameroon football legend Eto’o said in the Citizen: “I am baffled as to why Bafana Bafana have constantly underperformed at the Cup of Nations.
“The South African league is well organised and one of the best in Africa so I do not understand why the national team is not that good.
“Football officials need to sit down and plan how to take Bafana to another level and make it the best national team in Africa.
“Given the strength of the national league, that is possible.”
