Pitso Mosimane has stressed that Bafana Bafana had a duty to protect players from Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates ahead of Saturday’s MTN8 final, insisting the national team must support both clubs.
South Africa secured a 1-0 victory over Egypt in Cairo on Sunday, with Mosimane making sweeping changes to the side that had beaten Guinea and Eritrea in their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
Among those given opportunities were Shandre Campbell and Puso Dithejane, who made their international debuts and impressed in a much-changed team.
With Bafana’s squad containing a large contingent from both MTN8 finalists, Mosimane was careful with workloads, particularly for players returning from injury. Orlando Pirates defender Nkosinathi Sibisi was introduced late, while Sundowns full-back Aubrey Modiba featured in training but was not risked against Egypt.

The decisions came amid social media speculation that Mosimane had deliberately protected Sundowns players because of his previous association with the club. The coach rejected any suggestion of favouritism and said maintaining good relationships with South Africa’s leading clubs was essential.
“We need to protect the players that are going to play in the final so that no one is going to say we have favourites,” Mosimane said.
“We played Sibisi in the last few minutes because he came from an injury, and has a cup final. I was afraid that Sibisi might have a problem. I know that Pirates are going to need him.”
Mosimane also provided an update on Modiba, saying: “Aubrey played in the last training session.”
The coach said Bafana’s responsibility was to ensure both clubs had their strongest possible squads for the final.
“We have to support the players so that the teams are good,” he said.
The final brings together two clubs that have set the pace domestically. Sundowns lead the league on 20 points, one ahead of Pirates, who have a game in hand, adding further significance to the Durban showdown.
