Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos says it’s clear who is best in Group K for AFCON 2023 Qualifiers

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has conceded that “Morocco is the best team” in their 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualification group.

South Africa were drawn to face the Atlas Lions as well as Zimbabwe and Liberia in Group K, with matches kicking off on the 23rd of March.

Broos was unable to lead his charges to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar while they were also absent from the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations finals.

Speaking after the draw, Broos was reported by KickOff to have said: “It is clear that Morocco is the best team in our group. They were at the Afcon in January, and were eliminated by Egypt and are a very good team.

“I know, maybe Morocco are the best in our group. There are some players who are playing in Belgium like Tarik Tissoudali and Selim Amallah so I know this team very well.

“So, I think if we want to finish first in the group, we have to beat Morocco.

“On the other side Zimbabwe, who we played against in the World Cup qualifiers. So we know them very well. We played two times against them last year. It is a tough team, but this is a team we have to beat.”

Broos added: “We are better than a few months ago so I think if we can beat them twice this will be very good for us.

“Liberia, for me, is really a team that I don’t know, I don’t know the players. So, it’s up to us in the next weeks to look at the games of Liberia, maybe Liberia is the weakest team in our group, but it’s always dangerous to underestimate an opponent.

“So, for that, first of all, we are going to look at their games and see how good they are but if we look at this group, I think first of all Morocco is the best team, Zimbabwe our neighbours, very tough games also, and Liberia normally it has to be the weakest team in our group.”
