Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi has expressed his desire to help Amakhosi claim their first piece of silverware since 2015.
The Soweto giants have been drawn against Benni McCarthy’s Cape Town City in the Telkom Knockout round of 16, while Chiefs also have the Shell Helix Ultra Cup final to look forward to.
Akpeyi and company will be squaring off with Mamelodi Sundowns at FNB Stadium in Johannesburg on Saturday as they aim to clinch the Shell Helix Ultra Cup.
However, the Nigerian is also setting his sights on the Telkom Knockout as Chiefs are determined to end their trophy drought this season. Their last major trophy was back in 2015 when they won the Premiership.
“We’ve been chasing to get a trophy for some seasons now and I think it’s a fresh start for a trophy,” Akpeyi told the media.
“So, we’re looking forward to make sure we start winning something from this season, starting from the Telkom [Knockout] or even from the weekend’s game that we will be playing.
“So, it’s very important because every win motivates you towards the next one, but obviously we have to start with one.”
Turning his attention to the Premiership campaign, Akpeyi added that even though Chiefs are currently top of the standings they can still improve on their performances.
“Though we are on top today, we are not perfect yet, we’re still trying to work things out in every department of the team,” he added.
“But so far it’s been going good, and we hope that we can continue with this momentum because it’s the only thing that will lead us into winning this trophy going ahead.”
