Kaizer Chiefs were beaten 2-1 by Zimamoto in Tuesday’s CAF Confederations Cup Preliminary Round second leg tie at Amaan Stadium in Zanzibar, but still advanced to the next stage 5-2 on aggregate.
Chiefs made some sweeping changes to the side who lost 2-1 to Golden Arrows on the weekend with the likes of Virgil Vries, Siphosakhe Ntiya-Ntiya, Hendrick Ekstein, Siphelele Ntshangase and Ryan Moon all featuring.
The result means the club advance into the First Round of the CCC where they could face either Madagascar’s Elgeco Plus or Equatorial Guinea’s Deportivo, who are set to play on Wednesday in the competition.
Chiefs came into the contest having conceded two penalties against Arrows and soon gave away another in the penalty area before the half-time break. Yussuf Ramadhan Mtuba showed composure to slot home from the spot.
The Glamour Boys responded in hot conditions in the second half on astro turf as Lebogang Manyama struck home a leveler to record his first official goal in all competitions. Bernard Parker was the creator with the assist.
Moon had the ball in the back of the net soon after but it was not given due to a foul that was spotted in the area.
In the closing stages with Chiefs already comfortably through to the next round, another penalty was given away and the hosts had the chance to win at least the second leg of the game. Mtuba was cool and collected as he struck home to record a brace.
