Kaizer Chiefs are hoping Elias Mokwana’s experience in North Africa and the Middle East will provide a timely boost to their attacking options after confirming the winger’s arrival on Wednesday.

The 27-year-old Bafana Bafana international returns to South African football after two seasons abroad, having joined Tunisian giants Espérance Sportive de Tunis from Sekhukhune United in 2024 before spending last season on loan at Saudi Pro League side Al Hazem.

Mokwana had been linked with a move to Amakhosi earlier this week after parting ways with Espérance, with the Soweto club now securing the services of a player they had reportedly pursued before his departure from Sekhukhune.

“Kaizer Chiefs have signed Bafana Bafana international Mokwana. The talented winger joins the club after gaining valuable experience in North Africa and the Middle East,” the club said in a statement.

Chiefs highlighted the experience acquired during his time overseas, describing his return as an opportunity to bring an established international back into the domestic game.

His arrival could address a pressing need for the club, whose wide attacking options have struggled for consistency this season. Youngsters Luke Baartman and Asanele Velebayi have shown promise but have also been affected by a lack of experience.

Mokwana offers a potentially valuable alternative, although his signing will bring expectations of an immediate impact. Chiefs have not disclosed the length of his contract.

There will also be questions over whether his overseas adventure has prepared him for a successful return, with previous Amakhosi signings arriving after prolonged transfer speculation only to struggle to justify the anticipation.
