The winger will be hoping to carry his impressive form into the showpiece after making a significant contribution to Sundowns’ success before the recent FIFA international break.
Matthews established himself as an important figure in the Brazilians’ attack, starting all their matches during that period and registering two goals and three assists as the club enjoyed a strong start to the 2026/27 campaign.
His contributions helped Sundowns maintain their position at the top of the Betway Premiership standings, secure a place in the MTN8 final and win the FIFA African-Asian-Pacific Cup.
The Tshwane giants claimed the latter trophy last month after beating Asian champions Al Ahli 2-1, further strengthening their ambitions to collect silverware across multiple competitions this season.

Having returned from international duty with Bafana Bafana, Matthews is now eager to rediscover his rhythm and maintain the consistency that has made him an influential presence in Miguel Cardoso’s team.
“I’m very grateful and motivated as well,” he said.
“I’d just like to continue from where I was before I went to Bafana and, now that I’m back, continue from there.”
Saturday’s encounter presents another opportunity for the 26-year-old to make his mark in a Sundowns shirt, with the club seeking to overcome a formidable Pirates side in the battle for the season’s first domestic cup trophy.
For Matthews, the occasion carries additional significance as he prepares to feature in his first MTN8 final since joining Sundowns from Swedish outfit IK Sirius in January 2024.
The former Sirius attacker understands the importance of the occasion and is eager to help his teammates deliver when it matters most.
“I’m very excited for the final. It is not like any other game. We have to win the final, and we’re just very excited to be here,” he added.
“We’re going to do our best to get through it and try to get the victory.”
