Khanyisa Mayo has returned to first-team training at Kaizer Chiefs and could be in contention for a return to the matchday squad next month, according to reports.
The 28-year-old striker has yet to feature this season after undergoing hernia surgery before the campaign. His return to the main group nevertheless gives Fernando Da Cruz another attacking option as Chiefs prepare for an increasingly demanding schedule.
Mayo has missed all seven of Chiefs’ Betway Premiership matches, as well as their pre-season camp in Spain. He was still training separately in September and did not return by the reported 20 September target.
There is no confirmed date for his competitive comeback, but the extended international window has provided Da Cruz and his staff with additional time to build Mayo’s fitness before domestic and continental football resumes.
Chiefs have scored 12 goals in seven league games, leaving them fourth on 13 points, seven behind leaders Mamelodi Sundowns, who have played one match more. Mayo’s return would add another option to an attack that has already produced the third-highest goals tally in the division.

Chiefs made his move from CR Belouizdad permanent in July following a loan spell in which he scored twice. His first goal came on his debut against Marumo Gallants, with his second arriving in a 4-1 victory over Magesi.
October promises to be particularly demanding. Chiefs begin their CAF Confederation Cup campaign against Zambian Cup holders Red Arrows before facing Orlando Pirates in the Soweto Derby on 31 October.
Flavio Da Silva could also return after the international break, while Langelihle Phili continues his recovery from an ankle injury.
For Mayo, the immediate challenge is to regain sharpness. If he can do so quickly, his return could arrive at precisely the right moment for Chiefs.
