The Bafana Bafana defender suffered a thigh tear after the World Cup and was set to undergo surgery in Finland.
The operation could have seen him sidelined until December, but it was ultimately cancelled, and he has been working through a rehabilitation programme instead.
Mbokazi could now return to competitive action in time for the Major League Soccer Play-offs after taking his first steps back in training.
Speaking ahead of facing Inter Miami at Soldier Field on Wednesday, Chicago head coach Gregg Berhalter detailed his side’s injury absentees, with Jonathan Bamba, Andre Franco and Mbokazi all currently working their way back to fitness.

“(Bamba) had an intensive field session today,” Berhalter said on his club’s website: “He was in treatment all weekend, but he was able to complete a good field session today. So my guess is there would be some availability, but we’ll have to see tomorrow.
“Mbokazi and Andre are out (against Miami) obviously, but making good progress. Andre was able to join the team in partial training on Sunday, and had a real intensive session today. So they’re all making progress.”
