Newly appointed head coach Pitso Mosimane will return as opposition to the country where he led Egyptian giants Al Ahly to two CAF Champions League titles and a Club World Cup bronze medal.

Bafana are set to clash with the Pharaohs a few days after their opening 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers when they host Guinea on 26 September before flying to face Eritrea four days later.

“Matches against Egypt are always tough and we do not expect anything less in this latest instalment,” said SAFA president Danny Jordaan following the announcement.

“I think that coach Pitso’s return to Bafana Bafana will add another twist because they know him very well in the North African country. This will be another great test for both teams.”

The two nations have met on 13 previous fixtures, with South Africa winning seven matches, drawing once and losing five times to the Egyptians including the last Group A clash in the 2025 AFCON.

Both countries made history at the 2026 FIFA World Cup as they reached the knockout stages of the tournament for the first time in their respective histories, with Egypt being eliminated in the Round of 16 and Bafana losing the Round of 32 clash against co-hosts Canada.
