Miguel Cardoso admitted Mamelodi Sundowns have significant work to do after the African champions survived a major scare to beat Polokwane City 3-2 after extra time in their MTN8 quarter-final at Lucas Moripe Stadium.

Sundowns eventually progressed thanks to Cassius Mailula’s late winner on his return to the club, but Cardoso was frustrated by his side’s vulnerability from dead-ball situations after both Polokwane goals came from set pieces.

“Last season we suffered three goals from set pieces. Today we suffered two. That is the story of the game,” the Portuguese coach said.

Polokwane twice troubled Sundowns with free kicks delivered into the penalty area and punished uncertain defending to force the match into extra time at 2-2.

Cardoso felt his side responded well after conceding early and was pleased with the quality of their first-half football against a physically demanding opponent.

“The man-to-man marking that Polokwane City put on the pitch was very physical and very demanding,” he said. “We reacted very well to the goal we suffered and made a beautiful first half, finding spaces to penetrate. We had chances to score more.”

Sundowns struggled to maintain control after Polokwane’s equaliser, and Cardoso acknowledged that fitness remains a concern after a disrupted pre-season.

“We are still not at our best physically, it is clear. Our pre-season was quite tough,” he said.

Despite the defensive lapses, Cardoso praised his players’ character and determination in grinding out victory.

“A lot of intention, a lot of commitment, and I am happy for the result,” he added. “It is the beginning of the season and the team showed a beautiful answer.”
