The South African Football Association (SAFA) has dismissed reports claiming Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has been offered a one-year contract extension, insisting no decision has yet been taken regarding the national team’s coaching position.
The statement follows reports on Tuesday that the Belgian had been offered a new deal to remain in charge until after the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations. The reports contradicted Broos’ recent comments to Belgian media, in which he suggested his time as Bafana Bafana head coach had come to an end.
With Broos’ contract due to expire at the end of July, speculation has intensified over his successor, with Helman Mkhalele, Pitso Mosimane and Benni McCarthy among the names linked with succeeding the Belgian.
Responding to the speculation, SAFA rejected the reports in a strongly worded statement.
“SAFA wishes to categorically state that these reports are false, unfounded and misleading.”
The association confirmed that Broos remains under his existing contract and stressed that no extension has been approved.
“Coach Hugo Broos remains under contract with SAFA until the end of July 2026, in accordance with his existing agreement.”

SAFA also revealed that its internal governance processes concerning the Bafana Bafana technical team have not yet been finalised.
“The Association’s governance processes regarding the Bafana Bafana technical team have not yet been concluded. Therefore, no decision has been taken, and no contract has been issued or approved by the National Executive Committee.”
The football governing body also criticised reports citing unnamed sources, saying they had fuelled unnecessary speculation over the Bafana Bafana coaching position.
“It is therefore regrettable that reports have been published alleging that Coach Broos has already received a contract extension… Such reporting creates unnecessary speculation, misinforms the football public and undermines the Association’s established decision-making processes.”
“SAFA further appeals to all media houses to uphold the highest standards of responsible journalism by affording the Association a right of response before publishing allegations or claims relating to its affairs. A simple request for comment would enable SAFA to verify facts and assist in preventing the publication and circulation of unfounded or unsupported reports.’’
“SAFA remains committed to transparent communication and will make an official announcement on the Bafana Bafana coaching positions once the appropriate internal processes have been completed and the relevant decisions have been taken by the Association’s structures,” the statement concluded.
