South Africa defender Ime Okon says his World Cup experience has equipped him for the next stage of his career as he returns to Hannover determined to help the German club push for promotion.
The 22-year-old centre back featured in all four of Bafana Bafana’s matches as they reached the World Cup knockout rounds for the first time, capping a remarkable year after establishing himself in Europe following his move from SuperSport United.
Back at pre-season training after a three-week break, Okon reflected on the unforgettable experience of playing in the tournament’s opening match at the iconic Estadio Azteca.
“That was simply crazy,” he said. “To walk out onto the pitch in such a stadium and play the opening match is probably the greatest moment of my career so far. These are feelings that are hard to describe.”
Although South Africa’s campaign ended in the Round of 32, Okon believes the achievement marked an important milestone for the national team.
“Of course, we would have liked to win the game and advance further, but we made it past the group stage of a World Cup for the first time. We can be very proud of that as a team and as a country.”
The former SuperSport United defender said his confidence had been growing long before the tournament, particularly after impressing during the March internationals.
“I felt I’d done quite well and the coach echoed that sentiment. I just kept working hard and trying to prove myself. Eventually, you get the feeling that the coach trusts you.”
Now back in Germany after Hannover narrowly missed promotion to the Bundesliga last season, Okon hopes the lessons learned against some of the world’s finest forwards will accelerate his development.
“You’re playing against the best players in the world,” he said. “Those matches were invaluable experiences. I want to bring what I learned back to the team, help us improve together and have a successful season.”
With preparations under way, Okon is eager to settle quickly and focus on the campaign ahead.
“I’m looking forward to being back on the pitch with the guys and starting the new season.”
