For the first time in their history, South Africa advanced beyond the group stage of a World Cup. Competing in the tournament for the fourth time, Bafana Bafana secured second place in Group A, finishing behind co-hosts Mexico, who swept all three of their matches.
South Africa’s campaign began with a disappointing 2-0 defeat to Mexico, and many observers quickly questioned the team’s chances of progressing. However, Broos and his players responded impressively. A draw against the Czech Republic kept their hopes alive before Thapelo Maseko’s second-half winner against South Korea sealed qualification.
Broos was clearly proud of his team’s achievement and used the moment to answer those who had criticised his methods and selections.
“I’m very proud of the performance of my team,” said the Belgian coach. “I think we gave an answer to all those big mouths of the last weeks who thought we had to change something.

“We just did what we always do. We followed our plan, and this is the result.”
The 74-year-old, who has been in charge of South Africa since 2021, described the achievement as one of the most emotional moments of his long coaching career.
“I said before that this could be one of the last tournaments of my career,” Broos said. “To finish a career in a way like this is something every coach dreams about.”
Broos also highlighted the strong bond he has built with his squad, insisting that belief and trust have been key factors in their success.
“The relationship between the players and me is very good,” he said. “I am their coach, but I also feel close to them. There is a lot of trust between us.”
South Africa now face co-hosts Canada in Los Angeles on Sunday, with a place in the last 16 at stake. Broos believes his players are ready for another challenge and another chance to create history.
“I know the players will be ready again,” he said. “They want to achieve something even bigger. They want to prove that they are a good team, and we will see on Sunday if we can go even further.”
