Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie has thrown his support behind Bafana Bafana, hitting back at former players for what he views as overly harsh criticism and expressing confidence that Hugo Broos’ side will silence their critics with a strong showing at the FIFA World Cup.
South Africa’s campaign has attracted intense scrutiny following their Group A opening defeat to co-hosts Mexico, with much of the criticism directed at Broos and his tactical decisions.
The Belgian coach faced backlash for naming a defensive starting line-up that featured five defenders and three defensive midfielders, with critics arguing the approach lacked ambition and allowed Mexico to control large parts of the contest.
Several former South African players and football analysts questioned whether Bafana Bafana had shown enough belief and intent on football’s biggest stage, while social media criticism intensified in the days following the defeat.

However, the atmosphere surrounding the team changed after South Africa produced a determined display to earn a 1-1 draw against Czechia earlier this week.
The result revived Bafana’s hopes of reaching the knockout rounds and shifted attention away from the earlier criticism.
It was in that context that McKenzie publicly voiced his support for the squad and urged critics to show restraint.
“In South Africa, you have some ex-players who never played on this level, busy hurling insults at Bafana Bafana players. Breathe and restrain yourself, please. Our boys will shame you by advancing to the next round,” McKenzie posted on X.
His comments reflect the growing divide between those demanding more from the team and those urging patience as Broos continues to guide South Africa through the tournament.
Bafana Bafana now face a crucial clash against South Korea at Estadio Monterrey on Thursday, knowing a positive result could significantly boost their hopes of progressing to the knockout stages.
