Mamelodi Sundowns missed a chance to tighten their grip on the Betway Premiership title race after being held to a 1-1 draw by Kaizer Chiefs.
The result leaves Sundowns still leading the standings but with their advantage under threat from Orlando Pirates, who sit three points behind with a game in hand and a superior goal difference—setting up a potentially dramatic finish to the season.
Despite controlling large spells early on, Sundowns found themselves behind midway through the first half. A loose ball from goalkeeper Ronwen Williams was seized upon by Mduduzi Shabalala, who quickly slipped in Flavio da Silva to slot home via the post and give Chiefs the lead against the run of play.
The hosts had already shown attacking intent before conceding, with Aubrey Modiba forcing a sharp save from Brandon Petersen, while Brayan Leon squandered a one-on-one opportunity after being played through on goal.
The first half, however, was as notable for its physicality as it was for the football. Sundowns were forced into an early change when Keanu Cupido was stretchered off following a heavy challenge, while Chiefs also lost Shabalala before the break after a reckless tackle by Jayden Adams—one of several flashpoints in a heated contest.

Sundowns responded after the interval with renewed urgency and found their equaliser 10 minutes into the second half. A well-worked move down the right ended with a precise cross into the area, where Leon finished confidently from close range to level matters.
But their momentum was checked soon after when Adams, already fortunate to be on the pitch, was sent off for a second bookable offence, leaving Sundowns to navigate the final stages with 10 men.
Chiefs attempted to capitalise on the numerical advantage, but clear chances were limited as the match became increasingly scrappy, dominated by turnovers and strong midfield challenges.
Even a man down, Sundowns looked the more likely to snatch victory late on. Substitute Iqraam Rayners rose to meet a set-piece in stoppage time, only for Petersen to produce a superb save to preserve parity and ensure Chiefs walked away with a valuable point.
The draw keeps Chiefs firmly in third place and on track for CAF Confederation Cup qualification, while Sundowns are left to reflect on a missed opportunity that could yet prove decisive in the title race.
