On Friday evening, Loftus Versfeld takes centre stage as Mamelodi Sundowns host Stade Malien de Bamako in a CAF Champions League quarter-final that carries expectation as well as opportunity.

The Brazilians, seasoned campaigners in Africa’s premier competition, must once again juggle their continental ambitions while maintaining their grip on domestic success.

Former Sundowns midfielder and Hollywoodbets ambassador Teko Modise believes the Brazilians’ mentality sets them apart.

“You can never question Sundowns’ mentality. They’ve been in the Champions League space for over a decade, and reaching the quarterfinals has become part of their rhythm,” he explained.

Modise stressed that the challenge is no longer about mentality but rather about crossing the final hurdle.

“It’s not about asking what kind of mindset they need,” he added. “They’ve already proven they can balance both fronts. Last season, they reached the Champions League final and still managed to win the league. For Sundowns, this is familiar territory.”

He acknowledged the difficulty of managing fixtures across competitions, pointing to the importance of squad depth.

“The Champions League is tough to win, and when you add domestic games, it becomes even harder. That’s why depth is crucial — to maintain balance and still collect maximum points when needed.”

On their opponents, Modise cautioned against underestimating Stade Malien.

“They may not have the same level of Champions League experience, but they’re not a weak side,” he warned. “They’ve earned their place here. They’ll be aggressive, they’ll try to intimidate, especially in unfamiliar surroundings.

“If they sit back and play for a draw, Sundowns must stay calm and patient. They must use their home game advantage because you never know what awaits in Mali for the second leg.”

The clash offers Sundowns the chance to set the tone early, assert their authority, and edge closer to the continental crown that has eluded them in recent years.
