With a three‑point lead over Mamelodi Sundowns at the summit of the Betway Premiership, Orlando Pirates head into Wednesday’s clash knowing the result could shape the league title battle.
Victory would not only strengthen their league ambitions but also keep alive hopes of a historic domestic treble. The Buccaneers are already MTN 8 and Carling Knockout Cup champions, while remaining firmly in contention for the Nedbank Cup.
Speaking to Vodacom Sport, midfielder Makhehleni Makhaula expressed confidence in the squad’s readiness: “The boys are ready, they can’t wait for the big stage, and the confidence is really high. It’s going to be a big one, I’m sure the guys can’t wait to be on the field. The league is something that we want and what our fans want — we want to make our fans happy.”
Makhaula also acknowledged Sundowns’ recent dominance in the PSL but made it clear that Pirates are aiming to shift the balance of power.

“Sundowns have been dominating the league, but we are here to possibly end that era. In a match of this magnitude, we must stay focused, avoid mistakes, take our chances, and make sure we don’t concede early.
He further applauded the contribution of new arrivals Andre de Jong, Daniel Msendami and Mpho Chabatsane, highlighting their positive influence within the squad. “The young players who are in the team have helped us a lot. I am happy that they are there. I would like to thank the chairman for bringing such credible talent to the team.”
