Stellenbosch FC are reportedly closing in on a loan deal for striker Tshegofatso Mabasa, as first revealed by iDiski Times.
The move would bolster Gavin Hunt’s attacking options following the departure of Fawaaz Basadien, whose exit has contributed to a dip in form for the Cape Winelands side, as well as the recent departure of André De Jong, who joined Orlando Pirates.
The club has also strengthened further with the signing of defender Wayde Jooste, adding versatility and experience to the squad.
Mabasa’s arrival could prove crucial for Stellenbosch, who are balancing their CAF Confederation Cup campaign with the challenge of climbing away from the relegation/playoff zone in the Betway Premiership. His presence would add depth and firepower to a frontline in need of reinforcement.

Despite winning the PSL Golden Boot in the 2023/24 season, Mabasa has struggled for regular game time under Orlando Pirates coach Abdeslam Ouaddou. Speaking to Robert Marawa on the MSW Show, Ouaddou explained his tactical reasoning:
“He knows that he is one of the best players in the box, capable of finishing in the box. You have seen the way we are playing — very high, chasing, and with high intensity. I cannot afford to leave the opponent with the ball for more than five or six seconds, it’s too much. We need to be very aggressive with the ball, and it is an area where he needs to do more.”
Ouaddou further highlighted the importance of pressing in his system:
“When we have players that are able to do that [aggressive pressing], sometimes with the staff we like to select that kind of player.”
A switch to Stellenbosch may therefore offer Mabasa a fresh opportunity to rediscover his scoring touch in a system that suits his strengths, while reigniting his career.
