South Africa midfielder Sphephelo Sithole has hinted at a possible move away from Portugal after the Africa Cup of Nations, despite recently signing a contract extension with CD Tondela.

Speaking to the media in Marrakesh, Sithole admitted that he is considering new opportunities after spending close to nine years playing in the Portuguese league. “For my future, I think after this tournament I want a better opportunity to play somewhere else. I’ve been in Portugal for the past eight, close to nine years now, so for me to go somewhere else, maybe outside of Portugal, if things go well, that can be good,” he said.

Although he has committed to Tondela until June 2027, Sithole revealed that discussions around his contract leave the door open for a potential transfer. “There were talks that happened around the deal, so I think if everything goes well, a move is going to happen,” he explained.

The 25-year-old has not dismissed the prospect of returning to South Africa, having been previously linked with Kaizer Chiefs in July last year, although no official offer was made. Asked if he would consider playing for South Africa’s big clubs, Sithole gave a positive reply, hinting at a homecoming.

While his AFCON displays have sparked debate, with critics questioning his consistency in midfield. With a long term deal at Tondela secured, he remains part of Portuguese football for now, but his openness to new challenges suggests change could be on the horizon.

Whether that path leads him back to South Africa or into another league abroad, the midfielder’s next move is expected to draw significant attention as he looks to cement his place on both the club and international stage.
