Chippa United coach Vusumuzi Vilakazi has defended his players following a 3-0 defeat to AmaZulu in the Betway Premiership on Saturday.
Vilakazi was taking charge of the team for the first time since his return to the club as head coach as a replacement for Luc Eymael.
Chippa had a chance to take the lead in the first half but Goodman Mosele missed from the penalty spot.
Hendrick Ekstein then opened the scoring on 42 minutes at the Buffalo City Stadium before adding a second from the penalty spot on 66 minutes. Athini Maqokolo then sealed the result with his goal on 53 minutes.
Speaking after the game, Vilakazi said on FARPost: “First thing I must say and admit that it’s a work in progress. I think we need to be honest with ourselves.
“There were a lot of problems, and you can’t rectify everything overnight. But in this game, you can only take the positives because we started very well and we dominated the first half.
“Had we converted the penalty into a goal, we would be talking about something else now. But by saying that, I am not blaming the player. Even top players in the world miss penalties, but it could have changed everything because we were on top of the opposition and scoring was just going to be a cherry on top for us.”
“As I have said, I don’t think that the players can be bad overnight. They cannot. So we just need to work on their minds in terms of believing in themselves and trusting the process,” added the head coach.
