AmaZulu's "Hunger to Succeed": Zungu Eyes Silverware and Great Season

Veteran midfielder Bongani Zungu believes a profound “hunger to succeed” is driving AmaZulu this season as they prepare for their upcoming Carling Knockout first-round match.

Usuthu are eager to reclaim their status in the South African football landscape.

Since their impressive second-place finish in the 2020/21 Betway Premiership under former coach Benni McCarthy, the club has struggled to maintain that level of performance.

A major trophy has also eluded them for over three decades, with their last piece of silverware being the 1992 Coca Cola Cup. More recently, they were runners-up in the 2010 Nedbank Cup and the 2022 MTN8 final.

Speaking at the Carling Knockout draw, Zungu elaborated on the atmosphere within the club, which is now guided by coach Arthur Zwane. The former Mamelodi Sundowns and Rangers star pointed to the energy of the new, youthful signings as the key differentiator.

“I think it’s the hunger [that’s needed],” Zungu told iDiski Times. “This season they brought in young players with a lot of hunger to succeed. That has been evident in the league cause we have been doing pretty much well and it’s exciting times for the club.”

Zungu sees cup competitions like the Carling Knockout as a vital opportunity to end the trophy drought.

He feels the current squad is finally hitting its stride, overcoming past weaknesses, and proving they are a force to be reckoned with against any opponent.

“Competitions like this are a chance for the club to grab some silverware. We are excited about the season, and we will continue to give every team we play against problems cause we have proven this season that we can play against anyone,” he asserted.

“We create chances which was the problem, but the guys are improving upfront, and the team is gelling very well.”

The club’s immediate focus, however, is a Betway Premiership clash against Kaizer Chiefs on Wednesday, before turning their attention to their cup commitments.

Zungu concluded by stating the squad is committed to their goal: “We’re looking forward to play well and try our best to have a great season.”
