Mohau Nkota’s agent, Karabo Mathang-Tshabuse, elaborated on the calculated decision for the former Orlando Pirates attacker to join the Saudi Pro League’s Al Ettifaq, a move she suggests offers a unique pathway for the 20-year-old talent.
While Nkota’s breakout season with Pirates led many to anticipate a transfer to Europe, Mathang-Tshabuse revealed that the Saudi league’s rapid global expansion and rising profile made it a risk worth taking.
Why the Saudi Pro League Was Chosen
Mathang-Tshabuse highlighted the unprecedented media attention the league is now receiving as a major draw for the young player’s career growth.
She noted the Saudi Pro League is one of the “fastest-growing leagues” globally. The recent acquisition of broadcast deals, such as with ESPN, was a key factor, as it provides a platform that can “elevate a player’s career” through massive exposure.
“I was hesitant. I told Mohau to be aware of the risks, including the possibility that things might not go as planned under a coach like Hugo Broos. But he considered it carefully and decided he wanted to take this chance. He is young, resolute, and ready to make his mark.”
Strategic Team Choice
The agent stressed that this was not a move to a minor club but a strategic signing with a competitive side, ensuring Nkota would maintain a high level of performance and exposure:
“Ettifaq is competitive, and he will be playing alongside world-class talents like Cristiano Ronaldo, Sadio Mane, Karim Benzema, and Georginio Wijnaldum,” she said.
Nkota joined Al Ettifaq directly from Spain, where he had been attending a pre-season training camp with Orlando Pirates in July, immediately integrating with his new squad.
