Kaizer Chiefs attacker Wandile Duba has revealed a discussion between him and his new teammate Khanyisa Mayo, who has offered to assist him in rediscovering his scoring boots.
The 21-year-old became Amakhosi’s preferred starter in the number nine position last season as the club was experiencing struggles in converting its chances to goals.
He netted crucial goals for the Naturena-based team, including the equaliser during their 2-1 win against Mamelodi Sundowns in the Nedbank Cup semi-finals, a trophy that they eventually won to end the decade-long drought.
Since that goal, Duba has experienced a dip in form and has yet to find the back of the net this season.
He ultimately lost his place in the starting lineup as the competition mounted with the arrival of four new attackers: Flavio Silva, Mayo, Luke Baartman and Etiosa Ighodaro.
Both Mayo and Silva enjoyed a good start to their stint with the Soweto giants, scoring on their respective debuts.
Speaking ahead of their Betway Premiership match against AmaZulu, Duba admitted to having an unpleasant start to the 2025/26 season.
“I didn’t start my season very well, that’s why the coach ended up taking me out of the team, because I wasn’t giving him what he wanted. So, I’m still working on myself, being better and getting back to the starting lineup,” said Duba.
“I think every coach needs a striker that scores in his team, because Flavio and Mayo got in the team and they both scored, and I wasn’t doing that, but with the tactics and everything, I think I was doing that very well, but it was just a matter of me getting the net.
Mayo, who is an experienced striker, has plied his trade for Cape Town City, making 93 appearances, scoring six goals and providing 6 assists before moving to Algerian giants CR Belouizdad. He has offered to work with Duba to revive his form.
“Mayo came to me in the morning and said, ‘Look, you and I are going to work together, even if we stay after training just to hit the net’. I think the new strikers with their experience will assist me to get me back to what I do best,” he revealed.
Chiefs will continue their Betway Premiership campaign on Wednesday in a bid to end their three-match winless run in the league after a promising start, which saw them go five matches without tasting defeat.
