Nuno Santos opens up on his Mamelodi Sundowns debut against Golden Arrows

Mamelodi Sundowns’ new signing Nuno Santos endured a bittersweet debut as the champions slipped to a 1-0 defeat against Golden Arrows in the Betway Premiership.

The occasion also saw fellow newcomers Katlego “Tsiki” Ntsabeleng and Bennet Mokoena make their first appearances from the bench, with the trio all handed their bows in Sundowns colours.

Santos, who arrived in a reported R20-million deadline-day transfer from Portugal’s Vitoria Guimaraes SC, replaced Jayden Adams at half-time to anchor the midfield.

Speaking after the match, the 26-year-old midfielder admitted to mixed emotions following the outcome of the match, and gave his perspective about South African football.

“It’s mixed feelings because I wanted to start with a win. Unfortunately, it didn’t happen. But at the same time, I’m happy with my debut and very proud of the team. We gave everything for 90 minutes to try and get three points, and although we didn’t succeed, we’ll keep fighting in the next game,” Santos was quoted by iDiski Times.

“It was a very physical and emotional game, but also with moments of real quality. I’m a player who always gives it all, always trying to help my teammates. For me, it’s always about the team before myself.”

The Portuguese midfielder also expressed gratitude for the reception he has received since joining the club.

He added: “I felt huge support from the fans and I want to thank the club and my teammates for the way they welcomed me. It’s very different from Portugal, but I feel at home already and I hope to bring joy to the team and our supporters.”
