Kaizer Chiefs suffer defeat in Angola on return to CAF Confederation Cup

Kaizer Chiefs slipped to a 1-0 defeat against Kabuscorp in the first leg of the CAF Confederation Cup preliminary round in Angola on Saturday.

Khalil Ben Youssef and Cedric Kaze took charge of Amakhosi in the absence of head coach Nasreddine Nabi, while Thabo Cele and Mduduzi Shabalala returned to the starting line-up.

The South Africa outfit started strongly with Glody Lilepo and Pule Mmodi going close to finding the opening goal.

The home side gradually grew into the contest and had the upper hand towards the latter stages of the opening stanza, but the score remained goalless at the halftime break.

Kabuscorp went 1-0 up on the hour mark when Julio Matondo found space in the box and headed past visiting goalkeeper Brandon Petersen.

Amakhosi upped the tempo and were close to the equaliser, but Thabo Cele’s effort thundered against the post.

The home side eventually held on for the victory, with the second leg of the continental tie set to be played at FNB Stadium next week.
