Marumo Gallants coach Alexandre Lafitte is confident his current squad have the capabilities to “win trophies” this season.
The Betway Premiership club started the new season with back-to-back victories over Richards Bay and Orlando Pirates.
Goals from Daniel Msendami (45′) and Jaisen Clifford (90+2′) on Tuesday cancelled out a Patrick Maswanganyi (16′) opener to secure all three points, to shock the Buccaneers, and leave Gallants in third place on the league standings.
Reflecting on the game, Lafitte, who joined Bahlabane Ba Ntwa after winning the Ivorian Ligue 1 with Stade d’Abidjan, explained his ambitions for the season while admitting his squad is not yet complete.
He said in the Sowetan: “I am happy to be here. I work with the president [Abram Sello] to improve the team and I believe in the future it’s possible to win trophies with this squad.
“It’s possible that we can still add two or three players before the window closes, a few foreign players can still come, a defender and a striker.”
Gallants scored late goals in both league games to secure the wins, leaving Lafitte impressed with the mental fortitude of his players.
“It’s a fantastic result. I am happy for the team, for the fans and for the club. It was a difficult game, we all know that Pirates are a fantastic team,” the young coach added.
“It was our second game scoring in stoppage time and that speaks volumes about the mindset and the mentality of the players. We have had a really good start.”
