Mamelodi Sundowns powered to a well-earned 2-0 win over AmaZulu FC in their Betway Premiership showdown at Loftus Versfeld Stadium.
Guided by head coach Miguel Cardoso, Sundowns continued their strong early-season form with a composed and clinical second-half performance.

AmaZulu, under the leadership of Arthur Zwane, showed defensive grit but struggled to pose a real threat going forward, ultimately falling short against the reigning giants.
The first half was a cagey affair, with both sides creating chances but failing to convert. AmaZulu threatened first in the sixth minute when Hendrick Ekstein’s left-footed effort from Tebogo Mashigo’s cross drifted just wide.
Sundowns responded through Kutlwano Letlhaku, whose shot was blocked after good work from Themba Zwane.
As the half progressed, Sundowns ramped up the pressure: Arthur Sales forced a fine save from AmaZulu goalkeeper Darren Johnson, and Letlhaku came close twice more, including a shot from range that sailed narrowly over.
AmaZulu countered sporadically, with Thando Ngwenya missing a golden opportunity from Nkosikhona Radebe’s delivery.
At the break, it remained goalless, with Sundowns enjoying the lion’s share of possession but unable to break the deadlock.
Cardoso made impactful changes at half-time, introducing Aubrey Modiba and Tashreeq Matthews for Divine Lunga and Letlhaku. The substitutions paid dividends almost immediately.
In the 53rd minute, Rayners broke the impasse with a clinical right-footed finish to the top corner, latching onto Matthews’ headed assist following a well-worked move.
Sundowns continued to dominate, with Modiba and Matthews combining for several opportunities, including a header from Matthews that Johnson tipped over.
AmaZulu made adjustments of their own, bringing on Ben Motshwari and Andiswa Sithole around the hour mark, but Sundowns’ midfield control, anchored by Teboho Mokoena and Marcelo Allende, stifled any comeback.
Further substitutions saw Peter Shalulile and Jayden Adams enter for Rayners and Zwane, adding fresh legs to the attack. AmaZulu’s best chance came late through Ngwenya, but his effort flew high and wide.
The hosts sealed the win in stoppage time when Matthews slotted home from close range, assisted by Sales, capping a performance where Sundowns registered 17 attempts on goal to AmaZulu’s six, and held 80% possession.
This result propels Sundowns to second in the Betway Premiership standings with four points from two matches, trailing leaders Marumo Gallants FC by two points. AmaZulu sit eighth with three points from their opening pair of fixtures.
Post-match, Sundowns celebrated a “convincing win” in their first home outing of the season, praising the “yellow nation” for their support.
AmaZulu, meanwhile, reflected on a “tough luck” defeat at Loftus, acknowledging the challenge posed by the champions.
