Orlando Pirates reveals new captain ahead of new season

Orlando Pirates have announced the appointment of a new captain and two assistants ahead of the new season.

In a statement that was released by the club on their website, Nkosinathi Sibisi was confirmed as their new captain, while Thapelo Xoki and Mbekezeli Mbokazi will serve as vice-captains.

“Orlando Pirates Football Club can confirm the appointment of a new Captain and Vice-Captains ahead of the start of the 2025/26 season,” the statement reads.

“The position of captain has been vacant since the departure of long-serving defender Innocent Maela. Maela led from 2022 to date, having taken over from another stalwart and legend, Happy Jele.

“In keeping with club tradition, the appointment came directly from the players themselves through a confidential voting process.”

Sibisi is set to wear the captain’s armband on Saturday when Pirates lock horns with Polokwane City in the opening rounds of the MTN8. They are aiming to make history by lifting the cup for the fourth time in succession.

The 29-year-old expressed his gratitude for being selected as the new skipper and vowed to fulfil the role to the best of his ability.

“It is truly an honour and privilege to be named captain of this great institution. It’s a responsibility that I accept and promise to fulfil the role in the best way I possibly can,” he said.
