Mamelodi Sundowns have officially announced the signing of highly-rated Stellenbosch defender, Fawaaz Basadien, beating out reported interest from Kaizer Chiefs.
The 28-year-old Bafana Bafana left-back has been a long-term target for the Brazilians, impressing with his commanding defensive performances for both club and country over the past three years.
His consistent displays made him one of the most sought-after defenders in the Betway Premiership.

Basadien’s career began at Milano United, followed by stints with Cape Town City Reserves, Ubuntu, and Steenberg United, before he made his top-flight breakthrough with Moroka Swallows.
He then joined Stellenbosch FC from the Dube Birds in 2022, where he truly made his mark. During his time with the Cape Winelands club, Basadien featured an impressive 111 times, contributing eight goals and providing 18 assists – an excellent return for a defender.
Last season, Basadien was particularly outstanding, playing a pivotal role in Stellenbosch’s second consecutive third-place finish in the Betway Premiership.
He also helped the club reach the semi-finals of the CAF Confederation Cup, further cementing his reputation as a top-tier talent.
Sundowns confirmed the acquisition on their social media platforms, with a post stating: “Basadien joins the home of the champions. The Yellow Nation is proud to welcome Bafana Bafana international defender, Fawaaz Basadien!”
This signing bolsters Sundowns’ already formidable squad as they prepare for the 2025/26 season. Their campaign kicks off with an MTN8 quarter-final clash against Richards Bay on August 3.
