Bafana Bafana midfielder Mihlali Mayambela has confirmed direct talks with Kaizer Chiefs amid growing speculation linking him with a return to South Africa.
However, the Aris Limassol star insists any move must make sense for both his career and current circumstances.
Mayambela, who has played a pivotal role at Cypriot side Aris Limassol since joining the club, helped them claim their historic first-ever league title in the 2022/23 season, followed by the Cypriot Super Cup.
Now 28, the winger finds himself at the centre of transfer rumours, with Chiefs reportedly eager to bolster their squad with his experience and attacking flair.
Speaking on SoccerBeat, Mayambela confirmed that conversations had indeed taken place between him and Amakhosi sporting director Kaizer Motaung Jr.
“There was a conversation. You can see the club is moving in a different direction. With the new signings, they’re building a strong team to compete and bring back the glory days,” he said.
While flattered by Chiefs’ interest, Mayambela was quick to stress that he is not under pressure to leave Limassol, where he enjoys a crucial role and consistent game time.
“I’m playing every game, I have a big role to play in my team, and I’m respected here,” he said.
“There were talks between me and the sporting director, and he’s doing his job. But for me, I don’t have to move unless there’s a real need.”
Though he didn’t rule out a future move to Naturena, Mayambela suggested timing would be key.
“Will it happen? I can say yes more than no. But I don’t know when – because it doesn’t only depend on me,” he concluded.
