Matchday 1: Banyana Banyana Begin WAFCON Title Defense with Dominant Win Over Ghana

Banyana Banyana have kicked off their Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title defense in impressive fashion, securing a comfortable 2-0 victory against Ghana at the Honneur Stadium.

Goals from Linda Motlhalo and Jermaine Seoposenwe in the first half ensured a dream start to the continental showpiece for coach Desiree Ellis’s side, earning them maximum points in their opening Group C fixture.

South Africa began the match with intent and their early pressure paid off. In the 28th minute, Banyana Banyana were awarded a penalty after Ghana’s Grace Asantewaa fouled Noxolo Cesane in the box.

Initially, the referee waved play on, but a quick VAR review overturned the decision, pointing to the spot. Midfield maestro Linda Motlhalo stepped up confidently, slotting the spot-kick low into the right-hand corner, leaving Ghanaian goalkeeper Cynthia Konlan with no chance.

Just six minutes later, Banyana Banyana doubled their lead with a moment of brilliant interplay. Lebohang Ramalepe found ample space on the right flank and delivered an exquisite through ball to Jermaine Seoposenwe.

The veteran forward, in what she has announced will be her final international tournament before retirement, displayed remarkable composure to beat Konlan with a well-placed finish, extending South Africa’s advantage to 2-0.

Ghana emerged with renewed determination in the second half, creating several opportunities to get back into the game. Alice Kusi unleashed a powerful long-range effort that rattled the crossbar, leaving Banyana Banyana goalkeeper Andile Dlamini beaten.

The Black Queens continued to press, and forward Evelyn Badu unluckily missed a golden opportunity from point-blank range, also hitting the crossbar with a header that should have pulled one back.

Despite Ghana’s second-half resurgence, Ellis will undoubtedly be pleased with her team’s defensive solidity and their ability to maintain a clean sheet. The victory provides a solid foundation for their WAFCON campaign, showcasing both their attacking prowess and defensive resilience.

Banyana Banyana’s next challenge in Group C will be on Friday when they face Tanzania at the same venue. With this strong start, they’ll be looking to build momentum as they continue their quest to retain the WAFCON title.
