Sold: Gavin Hunt Bids Emotional Farewell to SuperSport United

Veteran coach Gavin Hunt has paid a heartfelt tribute to SuperSport United following the shock sale of their Betway Premiership status to Siwelele FC.

The news marks a poignant end to an era for one of South African football’s most consistent and respected institutions.

Hunt, who enjoyed two significant spells at the club, took to social media to express his deep sadness at the development. “Goodbye to a club that was dear to my heart.

A club where so much was achieved – trophies, producing players, and so many memories,” Hunt posted on X (formerly Twitter).

A Legacy of Success and Development

The 60-year-old tactician is widely regarded as SuperSport United’s most successful coach. During his initial tenure from 2007 to 2013, he famously guided Matsatsantsa to an unprecedented three consecutive league titles between 2008 and 2010.

His disciplined, direct, and pragmatic style of football transformed the Pretoria-based club into a formidable force in the domestic game, laying a strong foundation for their identity throughout the 2010s.

Hunt returned to SuperSport in 2022 after a challenging period, including a brief stint with Kaizer Chiefs. However, his second spell proved to be less fruitful, and he mutually parted ways with the club in March 2025 as the team struggled near the foot of the table. Andre Arendse was subsequently appointed interim coach for the remainder of the season.

The End of an Era: SuperSport International Sells Premiership Status

The unexpected sale of SuperSport United’s top-flight status was officially confirmed last Thursday in a statement by parent company SuperSport International.

The broadcasting giant cited a strategic decision to focus on its core business operations, which ultimately led to the sale of the club’s Premiership license to Bloemfontein-based Siwelele FC.

The news has sent ripples throughout the South African football community. Beyond the immediate impact of the sale, former players have also voiced their profound sadness and respect for the club’s enduring legacy.

Former captain Ricardo Katza, who dedicated over a decade of his career to SuperSport and lifted multiple trophies, shared his sentiments on Radio 2000.

“When I got to SuperSport United in 2003, there was one trophy. When I left, there were six,” Katza recounted. “But this was more than just a football club. They developed us holistically. That’s why I stayed for so long, especially coming from Cape Town.”

SuperSport United’s legacy extends far beyond its impressive silverware collection. The club was renowned for its commitment to nurturing young talent, providing a stable environment for both players and coaches to thrive, and maintaining a high level of professionalism.

Matsatsantsa played a crucial role in the development of South African football, leaving an indelible mark with its competitive edge and long-term vision.

While its elite status now rests in new hands, the profound impact of SuperSport United — both on and off the pitch — will forever be etched into the rich tapestry of South African football history.
