Kaizer Chiefs legend Tsepo Masilela has confirmed receiving a call from his former team asking whether Orlando Pirates youngster Relebohile Mofokeng would be a suitable fit for the club.

The 20-year-old has been a pillar of Pirates’ set-up following his promotion from the club’s DDC team. He has played a total of 89 matches, scored 18 goals and provided 22 assists.

He has assisted the club to lift three trophies, including two MTN8 titles and one Nedbank Cup.

His impressive skills have earned him a place on the national team, where he has earned five caps and is poised to be in Hugo Broos’ squad that will partake in the next Africa Cup of Nations taking place in Morocco this December.

Masilela confirmed that he was contacted with regards to Mofokeng being a good match for his former side, Maccabi Haifa. The retired left-back spent five years with the Israeli club between 2007 and 2011.

“I got I got a call from a journalist from Israel, he wanted to know more about the boy [Mofokeng] if he can make it that side, and if he’s ready or up for the challenge for a team like Maccabi Haifa because it’s a big team in Israel,” he said while speaking to SoccerBeat.

Haifa is a formidable team in the Israeli Premier League, having been crowned champions 15 times and regularly qualifying for the UEFA Champions League.

The 40-year-old advised the rising star to consider the move, describing it as a stepping stone towards a move to Europe. Masilela moved from the club to Getafe CF, a team that competes in the Spanish La Liga.

“It’s a team that time and again they do qualify for the Champions League, and we’ve seen them play against the likes of PSG when [Lionel] Messi was there. Those are the stages that a soccer player wants to be on.

“It depends on the player, but if looking at the age, it can also be a perfect stepping stone because when you’re in Israel, it’s a league where they also have eyes from European countries.

Sechaba Mofokeng, who is the father of Relebohile, recently said that he would like to see the starlet playing overseas next season.

“My biggest wish is to see Rele overseas in 2025/2026. I’m praying every day. I don’t want to see him in the Betway Premiership again this season. I know God will answer my prayers,” Mofokeng said while speaking to Soccer Laduma.
