Kaizer Chiefs’ academy graduate Aden McCarthy has discussed his feelings about debuting in the senior team following a successful spell with the club’s DDC team.
The 21-year-old played a key role in Amakhosi being crowned champions of the 2024/25 DStv Diski Challenge ahead of defending champions Stellenbosch FC.
He made his debut on Saturday, 17 May against Sekhukhune United in a Betway Premiership match that ended in a 1-1 draw. He was part of the Bafana Bafana squad that defeated Malawi to qualify for the CHAN tournament.
Aden revealed on the club’s website that the debut was a dream come true for him, as it had always been his dream to play for Chiefs.
“I was born into the Kaizer Chiefs colours. My dad was still playing for them at the time. Making my debut for Kaizer Chiefs was a dream of mine since I was a small boy, so it was a big accomplishment to make it come true.
“As a young player, I just gave my best and I knew the chance would come when the timing was right and I am happy the coach gave me the opportunity to showcase my talent.”
McCarthy is the son of the club legend Fabian, who played for Chiefs between 2002 and 2008. The pair became the fifth father-son duo to ever represent the club.
“Being the fifth father-son combination to play for Kaizer Chiefs is crazy to think about, but honestly, it’s a big honour for me and my family.” McCarthy Jr. continued.
“I need to give credit to my mother. People will post about my father because of our football link, but my mother has been the backbone for us,” he concluded.
Fabian opened up on witnessing his son’s first game with the senior team, “It was a very proud and also emotional moment. If only my late father could have seen Aden make his Kaizer Chiefs debut. For myself and my wife, Melissa and our extended family, we are very proud of Aden.”
“I am happy to be part of the father-son legacy at Kaizer Chiefs. Thank you for the opportunity and all the best to Aden,” he said.
Amakhosi have been struggling with several key defenders battling with injuries, Bradley Cross receiving a red card during the Soweto Derby on 3 May may added to the woes of Nasreddine Nabi, who had to turn to McCarthy to fill in the left-back position..
Cross has served his suspension and should be available for selection when they take on Polokwane City in their last league match on Saturday. It remains to be seen whether the youngster will be granted another start.
