Contract Update: Mamelodi Sundowns Secure Key Defender with Contract Extension

Mamelodi Sundowns have taken a significant step in reinforcing their defensive lineup by extending the contract of seasoned centre-back Mothobi Mvala.

The club confirmed the agreement earlier today, highlighting their intent to maintain stability and experience at the heart of their defense.

Mvala, known for his composure, aerial strength, and tactical awareness, has become an integral part of the Masandawana setup since joining the club.

His renewed commitment ensures continuity in the backline as the club continues to compete at the highest level, both domestically and on the continent.

The timing of the announcement couldn’t be better, as Sundowns prepare for a high-stakes encounter against Egyptian heavyweights Pyramids FC in the first leg of the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League final.

The much-anticipated clash is set to take place this Saturday at Loftus Versfeld Stadium, giving the Brazilians a vital home advantage.

The return leg will be staged in Cairo two weeks later, where Sundowns will look to capitalize on any lead gained at home. With Mvala now secured for the foreseeable future, the club can approach the final phase of the continental campaign with reinforced confidence and defensive assurance.

Having already clinched their eighth consecutive league title, Masandawana rounded off their domestic campaign with a 2-0 triumph over Magesi FC at Loftus Versfeld on Sunday. With the league crown secured, their full focus now shifts to continental glory, a title they last captured in 2016.

The club’s new head coach, Miguel Cardoso, will be hoping to lead the side to a return to the pinnacle of African club football.

Cardoso, a former Esperance coach, has experience on the big stage, having reached the final in 2024 with the Tunisian side – only to fall short against Al Ahly, who claimed their 12th title.

His experience in these high-pressure moments could be crucial for Sundowns’ pursuit of their second CAF Champions League trophy.

Mvala, whose future at the club was never in doubt, has signed a new deal that will keep him at Chloorkop until June 2026. The 30-year-old, fresh from recovering from an injury, made a substitute appearance in the win over Magesi and is expected to play a pivotal role in Sundowns’ Champions League campaign.

Since joining the club in 2020, Mvala has made 119 appearances, contributing seven goals and four assists. He’s developed into a stalwart for both Sundowns and the South African national team, where he has earned 27 caps and is a key figure under coach Hugo Broos.

Mvala is expected to be instrumental in Bafana Bafana’s efforts in the upcoming 2025 AFCON and the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
