Orlando Pirates-linked Rulani Mokwena part ways with Wydad AC

Hot Seat: Former Mamelodi Sundowns coach Rhulani Mokwena Granted Leave By Wydad Amidst 'Pressure'

South African mentor Rulani Mokwena and Moroccan powerhouse Wydad Athletic have reached a mutual decision to part ways.

Mokwena had confirmed earlier that he would leave Wydad at the end of the season.

However, the ongoing poor performance compelled the club to allow the coach to leave immediately.

He was at the helm of Wydad for 35 matches, securing 14 wins, 14 draws and suffering 7 losses.

The Red Castle have gone for seven matches without a win in all competitions. Wydad played six consecutive draws in the Botola Pro1, where they are placed third with 45 points from 27 matches.

They are six points behind the second-placed AS FAR, while log leaders RSB Berkane have collected 60 points in 26 matches.

The former Mamelodi Sundowns coach and his team were also eliminated in the round of 16 of the Moroccan Throne Cup by MA Tétouan, who are fighting relegation in the league.

Wednesday’s 1-1 draw against OC Safi appeared to be the final straw as both parties decided to end their strained relationship.

Med Amine Benhachem has been tipped to take over as interim head coach for the remainder of the season.

Mokwena has been heavily linked to Orlando Pirates, who are searching for coach Jose Riveiro’s replacement ahead of the next season.

The contract between WAC and coach Rhulani Mokwena has come to an end. 👋
