Durban City defender Sinamandla Zondi dies after collapsing during a match

Promotion-seeking Durban City have confirmed the death of their player, Sinamandla Zondi.

The 22-year-old defender is said to have died after he collapsed during the Motsepe Foundation Championship match against Milford FC at Chatsworth Stadium in Durban on Tuesday night.

This unfortunate incident forced the KwaZulu-Natal derby to be suspended.

“It is with sadness we confirm the passing of Sinamandla Zondi, known as ‘Sgora’, a loved member of the Durban City family,” the club said in a statement.

“Sinamandla was more than a talented footballer, he was a teammate, a friend, a brother, a son and an inspiration to all who knew him.

“Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with his family, friends, teammates, coaches and everyone affected by this tragic loss.”

City, previously known as Maritzburg United before relocating to the coastal city at the start of the season, leads the race for promotion to the Betway Premiership.

The Farook Kadodia-owned club have collected 46 points after 25 matches and enjoys a five-point lead over second-placed Kruger United, who have played 26 games.
