Tapelo Xoki backs Mbekezeli Mbokazi to shine at Orlando Pirates

The future of Orlando Pirates’ backline looks bright as 19-year-old defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi continues to turn heads in his breakout season.

The KwaZulu-Natal born defender made his senior debut in March during the Buccaneers’ 1–0 away win over Chippa United in the Betway Premiership. Since then, he has impressed with his composure, maturity, and defensive discipline, making a strong case for regular selection.

His performances have caught the eye of senior defender Tapelo Xoki, who sees something special in the youngster.

“He (Mbokazi) has made it easy for us to play with him. He listens, he works hard, so we just guide him when needed. We don’t want to overload him with instructions. We let him express himself, learn through experience, and support him when mistakes happen,” said Xoki, ahead of the team’s Nedbank Cup semi-finals tie with Marumo Gallants at Orlando Stadium on Sunday.

“We want him to be himself. The sky is the limit.”

Mbokazi is part of an exciting generation of young talent at Pirates, alongside Mohau Nkota, Relebohile Mofokeng, and the sidelined Thabiso Sesane.

With guidance from experienced players and the hunger to grow, Mbokazi’s future at Pirates, and in South African football, looks incredibly bright.
