Clean Sheet: Steve Barker believes not conceding at home key to Confederation Cup semi-final spot

Steve Barker underscored the pivotal role of their clean sheet at home in Stellenbosch’s TotalEnergies Confederation Cup journey, ultimately paving the way for a semi-final berth.

The Stellenbosch FC coach emphasized that preventing Zamalek from scoring in the first leg of their quarter-final clash at the Cape Town Stadium proved to be a foundational element in their success.

The resolute defense displayed in that initial encounter ensured the Egyptian giants were unable to secure a potentially decisive away goal advantage.

Reflecting on their impressive 1-0 victory in the return leg at the Cairo International Stadium, which sealed their passage to the final four, Barker highlighted the significance of their earlier defensive solidity.

“Yes, I think it was very important for us not to concede in our home game. As you all know, Zamalek had a big chance in the 86th minute, but we made a crucial save. That was a turning point – if they had scored, it would have made things a lot more difficult for us coming here,” Barker remarked.

“So, knowing we hadn’t conceded an away goal gave us confidence. The message to the players was simple: we have to show hunger, desire, and put in the work. You don’t come to a stadium like this, against the defending champions, and win without giving everything.

He further elaborated on the psychological boost gained from their defensive performance in the first leg. “We knew we’d have to make sacrifices, and credit must go to the players for the work they put in, the discipline they maintained, and their unwavering unity throughout both legs”.

Barker lauded his squad’s collective effort and dedication, acknowledging the considerable sacrifices made by each player to achieve this historic milestone in the Confederation Cup. Stellenbosch FC’s historic run continues, and with one more step to the final, the dream of lifting a continental trophy remains alive.
